Legacy Community Health has established a beacon of hope in the historic Fifth Ward of Houston, an area once recognized as a “health care desert.” The clinic’s expansion is a response to the growing demand for affordable, high-quality healthcare in an under-served community. The two-story clinic is a marvel of efficiency and design, featuring a full pharmacy, lab, OBGYN and pediatrics unit, general practice, dental suite, vision suite, behavioral health suite, and over 20 exam rooms.
The design team, with a keen eye for detail and a commitment to cost-effectiveness, has executed innovative solutions that enhance the clinic’s operations. The on-stage/off-stage workflow, with dual entry/exit points for patient exam rooms, streamlines staff movement, fosters better communication, ensures patient privacy, and crucially, reduces medical errors. The vibrant use of colors and bold graphics not only aids in wayfinding but also creates a welcoming atmosphere for patients and families.
Community art is a focal point of the clinic’s aesthetic, with a striking mural by Houston artist Reginald Adams adorning the exterior. This piece, along with the collaborative mosaic crafted by staff and community members, weaves the clinic’s identity into the fabric of the Fifth Ward. The clinic’s innovative design, which includes a grand staircase in the lobby, not only optimizes space but also invites visitors to explore the facility’s upper level.
Legacy Community Health’s new clinic stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design and community engagement, offering a modern and inviting space that promises to serve the Fifth Ward for years to come. The project’s pursuit of LEED Certified status further exemplifies its dedication to sustainability and excellence.
