This project transformed a steep hillside in the heart of the Fort Worth Zoo into an immersive African wilderness experience, reimagining the beloved African Falls exhibit. Visible from the zoo’s main entrance, a dramatic series of cascading waterfalls now forms the backdrop for African predator habitats. More than 2,400 gallons of water per minute flow over the falls, shaping distinct spaces for both animals and guests. Signature viewing experiences are integrated into themed elements such as a safari bus, an African village, and a rock grotto—offering up-close encounters with lions, wild dogs, and cheetahs through creatively placed safety glass.

The adjacent Asian Falls renovation introduced new boardwalks, pathways, and bridges that guide visitors through enhanced tiger habitats featuring waterfalls and expanded ponds. Themed elements—including ancient ruins, rock outcroppings, and custom-carved features—blend seamlessly with native plants and natural materials to create dynamic environments for clouded leopards and birds.

Utilities, barns, and service areas were discreetly integrated into the landscape, while finishes and architectural details were carefully selected to complement the exhibits and maintain a fully immersive experience for visitors.

Dunaway provided comprehensive planning, landscape architecture, civil engineering, and structural engineering services for all exhibits, site improvements, utilities, and supporting structures.
