Dunaway provided civil engineering services for a new 10,000-ton cooling plant located in downtown Austin. The facility is part of the Austin Energy Downtown District Cooling System, which serves 30 customers with a total cooling load of 20,000 tons. This project involved the installation of 5,000 to 10,000 tons of additional chilled water capacity at the Crescent Tract Property, including chillers, cooling towers for condenser water, and all associated infrastructure and appurtenances.
Key site challenges included:
- Height restrictions due to the Lamar Bridge Capitol View Corridor
- Design constraints on a narrow urban site
- Construction within the Union Pacific Railroad right-of-way
Additional complexities involved scaling up plant capacity during design and securing expedited permitting for the chilled water tap to meet Austin Energy’s operational timelines. Dunaway also developed traffic control plans to support construction activities within the public right-of-way.
